I have received your despatch p. 44 of the 18th March, & I am glad toperceive by it that any chance of a discusion
with the Chinese Authorities in consequence of the attempt of certain british subjects & American Citizens to establish themselves on the Chinese there opporite Ronghong. has been obviated by the removal of the parties to Honghong.
I think it right however to point out toyou that although it may be difficult in some cases to cause the Chinese Authorities to distinguish between British Subjects & the subjects and litigens of other Foreign Powers & the transgresions of the latter may therefore be occasion_ally imputed to the former, this sewants in Pir J. 7. Davis Bait
